2012 Books: March

The Sense of an Ending
I read this book on our recent trip to Chile after hearing about it on NPR. The hardest part of the book for me was getting over liking the main character. He’s just not a very nice person and as the sole narrator, his version of the story is the only one we are exposed to. However, I imagine this is entirely the point of the book and also one of the reasons I never finished Catcher in the Rye (main character). The story itself was engaging enough but I’m not sure I would have finished it if it hadn’t been the only book I brought with me.

Running With Scissors
This book has been in my library waiting for me to read for a few years now. I had seen the movie a few years back but while waiting for some library books to come in, I decided to give it a try. I generally like Burroughs writing style but it gets a little old after several hundred pages. The stories are fantastical, ridiculous, uncomfortable and laugh-out-loud funny but many people have challenged the ‘memoir’ label. Regardless, it’s a quick and fun read.
