We spent three days in Galway and explored a little bit on each day. Many streets were closed to cars, and the main restaurant streets were packed with lots of people out walking around.
One of our favorite spots was the canal waterway that leads up to The University of Galway from the Bay.
The University is quite pretty, with a grassy quad, ivy covered buildings, and a quirky biology museum with taxidermied animals and skeletons.
Nearby is the Galway Cathedral, a fairly modern building built in the 1950s. It features lovely stained glass, marble inlaid floors and a wooden ceiling made from American cedar. Suggested 3€ donation but not required for a visit.
Nearer to the bay there are several pedestrian paths, including Nimmo’s Pier with views of the colorful “Long Walk” houses and the memorial to Claddagh fishermen, South Park Beach, and the Mutton Island Causeway. We spent some time along here on my birthday looking for beach glass and Eric skipped some stones. The Mutton Island Causeway was long, and ultimately there was no access to the actual island. We did see some swans, but the area was rather smelly with the PT plant and seaweed.
