Eric’s 50th: Pontevedra sites

by | Jul 24, 2026 | International Travel, Travel

On the drive from Santiago de Compostela to Pontevedra, we took the non-toll scenic route south. Halfway we stopped for Fervenza de Segade, a waterfall, where I stayed with the car while Eric hiked in.

One of the reasons Eric marked Pontevedra as a “want to see” on this trip was its reputation as a pedestrian only old town. This was mostly true! It was really nice walking around and not seeing cars parked everywhere.

There are a few interesting sites to see in town, like the Convento de San Francisco and the ruins of the Santo Domingo Church.

And like most open air markets on this trip, the experience of the municipal market was underwhelming with lots of closed stalls.

The large memorial to fallen soldiers in Alameda de Pontevedra was a peaceful place to walk around.

We were happy with our apartment location as it was located right by the Avenida de Buenos Aires river walk area, allowing great views of the River Lérez and a network of pedestrian-only paths for walks in the morning and evenings.

Before leaving Pontevedra, we stopped into the Museo de Pontevedra, an art museum which was much larger than either of us expected. Lots of modern art and 19/20th century paintings, including an exhibition on Castelao.
