Euro Fall Trip: Slovenia – Bovec food + drink

Monday

After our day of detours we decided to try our luck at the always crowded Thirsty River Brewing. We split a smash burger and a sausage plate, accompanied by the ‘wrong bar’ redcurrant sour triple for Eric (really good, nice tartness) and the ‘on my way’ porter for me. I couldn’t resist also trying the ‘demons milk’ maple nut imperial stout while Eric got a brownie (very dry) to end our meal. We started outside but the smokers were getting to me and then it started raining, so we moved indoors.

Tuesday

Eric picked up pastries for breakfast at the local supermarket.

After a day of rain and wet feet, we just wanted something easy, so we parked the car and walked to Pizzerija Črna Ovca for takeaway. Eric got the bare bones sauce and cheese margarita and I got one with mushrooms. We should have just split one because both were surprisingly bland. A pinch of salt helped a little but I have no idea why this place has such good reviews.

Wednesday

After a full day of river views and passes, we stopped back at Thirsty River Brewing for beers outside (enjoyed the same beers as last time).

For dinner we made reservations at Bistro 9:45, located 2km from town, so we opted to drive rather than make the walk in the dark. When we walked in we were surprised by the rather harsh lighting, more industrial (bright and blueish) than we’d expect for the vibe. However, the service was immediately friendly. Our waitress informed us that the printed wine list was out of date, so we described what we wanted and she got it right for both of us! Eric got a Zelen (light smoke, dried pineapple, medium acidity. medium body, lighter finish) and I got a Cab Franc (some tannin, lots of black and white pepper, spicy and aromatic. Medium body, medium finish) Each choice went well with our mains, pork tenderloin for Eric and the venison for me. One of the best meals we had in Slovenia, both for the flavor profiles and presentation.
