Euro Fall Trip: Slovenia – Boca Falls + Kobarid, the rainy day

by | Nov 14, 2025 | International Travel, Travel

Note: Unlike the Bled version, the Julian Alps Card: Soča Valley was 25€ with no discount for staying in the valley. I did the math and we didn’t find enough interesting things that were included to justify getting the card.

Boka Waterfall

A massive waterfall a few minutes drive southwest of Bovec, Boka is 106 meters (348 ft) high and 18 meters (59 ft) wide, with the dramatic top portion visible from the road. There is a small free parking lot just at the curve on Podklopca road near the bridge and a short uphill hike will get you a viewpoint.

The rain was starting to wane a bit so we continued to Kobarid, parking at the Ossuary of Italian WWI soldiers memorial park.

I took a quick peek inside the Church of St. Anthony but the door was roped off for entry.

The views of the town were pretty from up here.

It was a long walk down the hill, through town, and over Napoleon’s Bridge to get to the Kozak falls trail. Along the way there were nice views up the canyon, but walking in the road was a bit dicey with a lot of car traffic over the bridge.

After the road walking, we regretted not just driving to the large falls parking lot and spending the 1,5€/hr parking fee. On the way to falls, the rain picked up significantly and even with umbrellas, it was difficult to get a good shot of the smaller falls given the tight viewing angle from the foot bridge.

The walk back to town (in an absolute downpour) was miserable – the road starting collecting water and while avoiding the deepest puddles on the edges, we were praying that we didn’t get splashed by passing drivers. Our waterproof shoes were no match for the weather, we both ended up with soaking wet feet and pants.

Eric was interested in the Kobarid Museum (8€), so I left him there and made the uphill climb back to our car on my own, resting a bit at the stations of the cross on the way. He liked the museum, which featured an exhibit on WW1 battle lines around town (lots of tunnels and trenches, eventually a massive gas attack), plus an exhibit on an American bomber that was shot down over the town in WW2.

He sent me a text when he was done and I drove down to the bottom of the hill to collect him. :)  At this point we decided to go back to the apartment and relax for the rest of the day. That included drying out our soaking wet hikers!
