Our visit to Bristol happened to coincide with the first weekend of the Gromit Unleashed 3 fundraiser event. Just over 50 painted statues of different Aardman animated characters were displayed, with about half were located around central Bristol. I managed to find 24 of them!
We have been big fans of the Aardman characters since Chicken Run in 2000 and after enjoying the latest movie, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, this was a delightful excuse to explore all corners of Bristol.
Downloading the app would have cost $3.50 (no thanks) but I did find out that printed maps were available at a few locations in town. I tried the We The Curious science museum first but the maps hadn’t been delivered as of June 30th. I had better luck the following afternoon at the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery
Tthe map proved to be super helpful in locating the remaining sculptures in town, especially the icons indicating the character in each location (Wallace, Gromit, Norbot, Feathers McGraw, or Shaun the Sheep) and whether it was outside or inside. Some of the pieces were pretty easy to find while others took some searching as the listed locations were very general, i.e. Cabot Circus (outdoor mall), Children’s Hospital (large complex) or Clifton Suspension Bridge (which side!?).
The video shows all of the statues and you can see some select ones in our Bristol gallery as well.
