For our last full day in the islands we decided to visit several places we hadn’t made it to yet, starting with Elduvík. A lovely village with 12(!?) full time residents and a gorge that was noted for jellyfish. While we didn’t see any sea creatures, a cormorant was hanging out in the water.
This may have been the windiest day, with 20-30mph winds along this section.
We also explored the east side of town, walking past the merman sculpture, for views back into town.
Next we drove past the small village of Funningur for views of a perfectly picturesque grass-roof church.
From there we drove back up into the hills for the Gongutúrur / Hvithamar trail. I decided to have lunch and sit this one out, so Eric did the hike on his own. The second photo is the beginning of his descent back to where I was parked!
From here, we connected the loop we didn’t do on Wednesday (due to poorly interpreted signage) for views of the Giant and the Witch again. The road between Funningur and Eiði takes you through a beautiful mountain meadow area – the most sheep we saw in one place!
After dinner we returned to the Saksun area for sunset and caught the sun just as it dipped behind the mountains. The weather is so changeable from one part of the island to the next, so even though it was misty 20 minutes away near our apartment, the air was clear here. It was also high tide, so the path we took earlier in the week to the ocean was now underwater!
A fitting end to our stay in the Faroe Islands.
